I came across the Minnesota State Park 125th Anniversary Challenge while looking for some upcoming MN State Park events. I didn’t know the challenge was happening and the more I read about it the more excited I got.
The challenge is to “Bike, Boot or Boat” 125 miles in 2016 in honor of the 125th Anniversary of the MN State Parks.
My kids love being outside. We would be stupid to work on this crazy Airstream project of ours if they didn’t love to be outside. Last year we boated, booted and biked a lot but I don’t think we came close to hitting 125 miles. I love the idea of setting this big goal, getting the kids excited about it and keeping track of our progress.
Patrick isn’t a huge fan of biking, Michael isn’t a huge fan of hiking if there isn’t a destination to work towards and Elise is 5 years old. 125 miles will be a lot of work but I think it will be great for us as a family. It will be a wonderful way to commit to getting our bodies and our minds ready for larger and longer Airstream family adventures.
The kids were gifted hiking boots and backpacks from my parents for Christmas. I can’t wait to put them to use!
We are going to boot up, rent canoes and spend the year convincing Patrick that biking is fun. And then when we hit our 125 miles… we will get a sticker!
I know. It is just a silly sticker but I think that earning that sticker as a family and then maybe sticking it on Alice (not completely sold on the stickering up Alice idea quite yet) will be a great way to really drill into our kids that it is the experiences and not the stuff that matter. And even though it may seem like we have only gotten a sticker for all our work, we really received so much more!
I am really stoked about this challenge. We will continue to post about our progress on the blog but for more timely posts, follow us on Instagram.
